Why 90 Days Works
Big goals are exciting.
Five year vision.
One year plans.
Big dreams.
But big goals can also feel far away.
And when something feels far away
it is easy to drift.
That is why I love 90 day goals.
Ninety days is long enough
to accomplish something meaningful.
And short enough
to stay focused and excited.
Think of them as sprint goals.
Early in my career
I was really good at building big plans.
One year plans.
Big strategies.
But the year never went exactly as planned.
Because life happens.
Unexpected problems.
New opportunities.
Things you never saw coming.
We call them "gotchas."
Things you could not have planned for
because you did not know they were coming.
That is why 90 days works.
You can see your calendar.
You can see the season you are in.
You can focus your energy.
And when those 90 day goals connect
to your bigger vision
something powerful happens.
Your five year vision
informs your one year plan.
Your one year plan
informs your 90 day sprint.
And your 90 day sprint
moves you forward.
Step by step.
Three things make a great 90 day goal.
First
the goal itself.
Something specific you will accomplish
in the next 90 days.
Second
the behaviors.
How you will need to show up
to make that goal happen.
And third
your why.
The deeper reason
this goal matters.
The goal tells you what to do.
The behaviors tell you how to show up.
The why keeps you going
when it gets hard.
I will give you a simple example.
My wife and I signed up
for a half marathon.
Now I do not love running.
But I love my wife.
So the goal was simple.
Complete the Half Marathon with my wife.
The behaviors were clear.
Follow the training plan.
Get my miles in.
Stay consistent.
And the why?
Connection with my wife.
Doing something together
that creates a memory.
Because the goal is not really the race.
The goal is the relationship.
And when the training runs get hard
or I realize I am slower than everyone else
The why keeps me moving.
That is the power of a 90 day goal.
Clear goal.
Clear behaviors.
Clear why.
That is how progress happens.
This Week’s Challenge
Set one 90 day sprint goal.
Not ten goals.
Just one.
Write down three things.
The goal.
The behaviors required.
And your why.
Then start building the reps.
Progress happens
one focused sprint at a time.
Now let’s go win the week!
