Direction, Correction, & Encouragement
Everyone needs a coach.
The best performers have one.
The best leaders have one.
The best high achievers are never doing it alone.
I want to tell you a quick story about my dad.
Because he showed me what great coaching really looks like.
There are a lot of things coaches do.
But great coaches consistently do three things.
First, they provide direction.
When I was a kid playing baseball, I had no idea what I was doing.
I did not know the rules.
I did not know where to stand.
I did not know how to hold the bat.
My dad showed me.
Here is where you stand.
Here is how you place your feet.
Here is what you are looking for.
Direction helped me understand the game.
And once I understood the game, I could play it better.
And have more fun doing it.
Second, they provide correction.
When I did something wrong, my dad did not shame me.
He did not get angry.
He did not punish me.
He corrected me.
If I missed a ground ball, he would pull me aside and explain why.
You did not get low.
Your glove did not touch the dirt.
That is why the ball got through.
Correction was not about making me feel bad.
It was about helping me do better next time.
Third, they provide encouragement.
Learning is hard.
Getting better is hard.
Growth requires belief.
After correction, my dad would encourage me.
Shake it off.
You'll get the next one.
That belief mattered.
It made me want to stay in the game.
It made me want to try again.
That is great coaching.
Direction.
Correction.
Encouragement.
And here is the truth.
You need that in your life too.
In parenting.
In leadership.
In work.
In relationships.
Most people do not seek coaching because they think it is inaccessible.
Or they do not know who to ask.
But when you decide you want to grow, you figure it out.
High achievers always do.
Find someone who can give you direction.
Someone who will tell you the truth.
Someone who believes in you enough to encourage you.
That will change your life.
And it will change the lives of the people you lead.
This Week’s Challenge
Ask yourself this question.
Who is coaching me right now?
If the answer is no one, go find one.
Look for direction.
Welcome correction.
Receive encouragement.
Growth happens faster with a coach.
